A Simple Guide to Installing a Sewer Pipe
The method applied in the installation of a sewer pipe is very important. If properly installed, sewer pipes can serve for years without any form of damage. When choosing the right method to install the sewer pipe, you’ll have to consider factors such as the material of the pipe as well as where it’s going to be installed. For instance, sewer pipes that are installed within a structure may present different challenges than those installed outside.

Installation Height and Elevation
Sewer pipes need to be elevated at a certain angle and that determines the approach to take during installation. If two pipes need to be connected, then the elevation starting and ending point should be measured at the beginning as well as the length of both pipes. Sometimes sewer pipes need to be connected to specific fixtures so it’s important to measure this as well.
Calculate the Slope
In order to obtain the pitch/drop of the pipe, you need to have the measurements for the length and elevation. There are certain values that are recommended for the drop/pitch depending on the length of the pipe. For instance, a 4 inch pipe requires a drop of 1/8 to ¼ per foot.
Prepare the Trench
The surface where the pipe needs to be installed needs to be smoothened. There are cases where you will also need to place bedding material (sand is the most often preferred material) at the bottom which will ensure the pipe remains intact by providing adequate support.
Laying the Sewer Pipe
When the surface is properly prepared, the next step is to lay the pipe. This is one of the most critical steps because the way the pipe is laid will determine how prone it will be to leakage. Make sure you begin with the point of low elevation as you move up. Simple steps like using a suitable primer before applying any glue to the sewer pipe can make a big difference. The primer helps to clean the pipe and ensure the glue adheres perfectly. You can also use a string by installing it at the same level as the sewer pipe and follow it through to be sure the pitch is on point.
Final Touchups
When the process of laying the pipe is complete, the next important step is to check for any signs of poor connections throughout the pipe. Look for areas where there could be a disconnection or broken pipe. Once you are sure that the installation has been properly done, cover the pipe with sand/gravel and compact it using the right equipment.
