Overview
Green Glue is a popular noiseproofing material used by builders in most construction projects for acoustic purposes. This compound has unique features that allow it to serve as a damping material to dispel sound waves vibrations that travel through walls, ceilings, and floors. Green Glue soundproofing compound converts mechanical energy from the sound waves into miniscule amounts of heat. When applied between two sheets of wallboards, this polymeric formula makes a damping system that effectively dissipates the noise. It can eliminate at least 90% of the noise, including sounds at low frequency.
However, note that the effect doesn’t come to force immediately after applying Green Glue. It needs some time to dry first. When it’s dry and elastic, the damping effect will begin. This usually happens on the 7th or 8th days after application and it will take at least 45 days before you realize the full benefits of Green Glue. In case nothing happens after this time, make sure to have the building inspected by a professional. It could be that the sound is coming through the ceiling. If so, treat the ceiling with Green Glue or build a wall up to the ceiling and then treat it with the Green Glue.
Many customers wonder if Green Glue can be used with just one layer of drywall. The answer to this question is “no”. You need to “sandwich” Green Glue between two or more solid building materials. There’s no set limit as to how many layers of Green Glue and drywall can be used, but the more you use, the better the wall performance you can expect in terms of soundproofing.
Green Glue is a wonderful solution that is completely non-toxic, water-based, and has a small VOC (5 grams for each litre). However, note that just like any latex products, it might emit a mild odour. This smell isn’t harmful and disappears after some time.
