Masonry cement is specially blended cement that is used to produce a strong binding masonry mortar for use in block, brick and stone masonry construction. It is made using Portland Cement, limestone or hydraulic lime and other materials. The materials are mixed together to ensure that the mortar is strong, durable, appealing and resistant to atmospheric conditions and chemical deterioration. Initially masonry cements were created so as to save the time spent in preparing Portland Cement and limestone at the work site.
Masonry cements come in grey as well as a variety of other colors. You can add a mineral oxide pigment to the mixture to produce a color that you desire. The cement has gained a lot of popularity in masonry construction due to the color availability, strength, workability and durability. Workability is achieved by using the specified proportions and mixing the cement with a machine. Dry mortar should not be used as it provides inadequate bonding support. Several additives are used in the manufacture to ensure that it is water repellant.
The cement is manufactured under controlled conditions in cement industries. After manufacture, it is checked and tested to ensure that it is in line with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications.
ASTM has classified the masonry cement into three classes, N, S and M. Type N is used for general construction of the exterior veneer walls and in non-load bearing construction. The S and M are used to prepare mortars for load bearing structures and in paving masonry.
