Sound Attenuation Batts

At BBS, we are proud to be authorized distributors of Sound Attenuation Batts (SAB’s) from Owens Corning. SABs are flexible, unfaced, lightweight, insulation blankets made of fiberglass. Metal stud wall cavities are susceptible to noise – SABs deliver the much-needed noise control.

SABs from Owens Corning are designed to fit the most commonly used metal framing dimensions. They are available in lengths of up to 9’ and thicknesses of 2½”, 3½” and 5½”

The SABs improve Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings by 4 to 10 points over what you get from an empty drywall cavity. SABs are easy to install fabricate and install – you don’t require any fasteners or adhesives. We recommend that you use supplementary support if the SABs do no fill the cavity.

Note that acoustic performance of wall assemblies can be affected by attention to details and workmanship. We, therefore, recommend that your SABs be installed by a qualified professional.

Installation

A leading benefit of Owens Corning Sound Attenuation Batts is their ease of installation and fabrication. Fasteners and adhesives aren’t necessary during the installation process. If the SABs fail to fill the cavity and if one side remains open and the partition is 8’ or more, supplementary support should be provided. The batts are 1/8” wider than stud spacing, and this allows a straightforward friction-fit installation.

Sound Attenuation Batts have high fire safety ratings because they are non-combustible. When tested in accordance with ASTM E84, their classification is 10/10. When tested according to ASTM E119, SABs can match up to a 2-hour rating as long as they are installed in an approved wall system.

Owens Corning Sound Attenuation Batts aren’t ideal for open cavities where they might come into contact with humans. While using the batts in an open cavity, you should use supplemental support for heights higher than 8’.  You should also ensure that the batts remain dry while shipping, storing, or installing them for the best performance.
