Blueskin VP160

Blueskin VP160
Blueskin VP160 is a state-of-the-art self-adhered water-resistive air barrier membrane designed to protect commercial and residential wall assemblies. Manufactured with a unique tri-laminate polypropylene facer bonded to a rubberized asphalt adhesive, Blueskin VP160 delivers unmatched performance in controlling air, moisture, and vapor movement across exterior wall systems. Its vapour-permeable structure allows buildings to breathe while offering superior protection against uncontrolled air infiltration and rain penetration.
Unlike traditional wraps or fluid-applied barriers, Blueskin VP160 forms a monolithic layer upon application, leaving no gaps, wrinkles, or weak points. It enhances the overall durability of wall systems and helps meet increasing demands for airtightness in new builds and energy retrofits.
Developed for above-grade wall applications, Blueskin VP160 is ideal for use behind cladding systems such as brick, siding, stucco, or stone. Its combination of air barrier technology and self-sealing adhesive make it a go-to choice for energy-efficient construction in any climate — including demanding freeze-thaw zones and high-humidity environments.
Benefits
- Air Barrier Protection: Helps reduce heating and cooling costs by preventing uncontrolled air leakage through the building envelope.
- Moisture Management: Allows trapped moisture to escape while resisting rain penetration, reducing the risk of mold, rot, and material degradation.
- Self-Adhering Technology: Bonds directly to the substrate without mechanical fasteners, forming a seamless protective membrane that minimizes installation errors.
- Durable and UV-Resistant: Withstands up to 150 days of UV exposure prior to cladding installation, offering flexibility for project timelines.
- Compatible with a Range of Substrates: Can be applied over concrete, exterior gypsum sheathing, plywood, OSB, and CMU — making it a versatile solution across different building types.
Properties
- FUNCTION: Provides a continuous air and moisture barrier on exterior wall assemblies.
- PRODUCT ROLE: Air, water, and vapour management for improved building envelope performance.
- BUILDING COMPONENT: Above-grade walls in residential, commercial, and institutional construction.

Overview
Blueskin VP160 stands out in the building materials market for its advanced material science and construction flexibility. By integrating a breathable polypropylene facer with a rubberized asphalt adhesive, it creates a barrier that resists air and water intrusion while enabling moisture vapor to escape. This makes it ideal for achieving code-compliant energy performance and reducing the likelihood of condensation-related issues inside the wall cavity.
Contractors appreciate the easy peel-and-stick application, which reduces labor time and eliminates the need for extra equipment. Its compatibility with a wide variety of substrates and cladding systems adds further appeal for architects and builders seeking a high-performance solution without compromising design freedom.
Blueskin VP160 has been tested to meet or exceed industry standards, including ASTM E2357 for air barrier systems, and is listed by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA). With growing emphasis on high-performance buildings and sustainable construction, it has become a standard in both institutional and residential building practices across Canada.
Guide
Installation
Step
01
Ensure all wall surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dust or contaminants. Prime porous substrates with Blueskin primer as required.
Step
02
Start at the base of the wall and apply the Blueskin VP160 horizontally, with the adhesive side facing the sheathing. Press firmly to ensure full contact.
Step
03
Overlap all horizontal and vertical seams by a minimum of 2 inches. Seal overlaps using a hand roller to prevent air and water infiltration.
Step
04
For penetrations (windows, vents, etc.), use pre-formed corner details and flashing tape to maintain continuity of the air barrier.
COMPARATIVE TESTING
When benchmarked against mechanically attached building wraps and spray-on barriers, Blueskin VP160 consistently shows superior air and moisture resistance. In third-party ASTM E2357 testing, it maintained air leakage rates well below the maximum allowable limits, offering enhanced energy savings and comfort. Its self-adhered membrane also reduces the potential for jobsite error compared to multi-step fluid-applied products.
APPLICATIONS
Blueskin VP160 is ideal for:
- Wood-frame and steel-frame wall assemblies
- Multi-residential and high-rise construction
- Institutional, healthcare, and education buildings
- Retrofit and energy upgrade projects
- Projects seeking LEED® certification or high-performance envelope solutions
