How much Gravel do you need for your Project?

It can be quite frustrating to estimate the amount of gravel you need for your upcoming project, especially if you don’t know the type of gravel you’ll use. You see, gravel comes in different grades which vary from texture to size of particles. Each of these gravel particles come at different prices.

So before you make measurements and do calculations, first determine the type of gravel you want.  This way it will be easier to plan for the space you want it to cover as well as your project budget. Here’s a look at the few things you need to do first.

Use a gravel calculator

Using a gravel calculator is the most efficient way to make the most of your project budget. Basically, gravel calculators are simple tools that guide you to knowing how much gravel you need to buy to fill a certain area to full depth.  They help to save on time and ensure that the project proceeds without delay or inconveniences.

You could also use them for other projects as well. Perhaps, you have a flower bed you want to top with soil or an island that needs filling, simply customize the options to suit your needs.

How the gravel calculator works

Measure the project area

First, measure the length and width of the project area you want to cover with gravel then, figure out how much depth of gravel you want to use to fill that area. Using these metrics, it will be easy to generate quick answers that give you an estimation of the gravel you’ll need to complete the project.

Keep note though, that most online gravel calculators only calculate volumes for projects on linear dimensions. In other words, it will be difficult for it to support volumes of areas with oval, circular or irregular shapes. For such projects, it’s better that you break the area into rectangular or square constituents. This way, you can calculate each segment separately, and then add all individual volume totals to get an estimate of the final measurement.

Evaluate the size and coverage

Once you’ve mapped out the space of the project, you must ensure to meet landscaping requirements. Gravel should always be a minimum of 8 inches deep. If you choose the small gravel, the coverage will be even. On the other hand, if the rocks are large, you’ll have to plan for an additional 1/ 2 inch of gravel.

Here’s a measurement guide to the amount of gravel you should buy per ton:

  • For ¼ and ½ inch of gravel,  use 100 square feet per ton
  • For ½ and 1 inch of gravel, have 90 square feet per ton
  • For 11/2 and 2 inches of gravel, use 80 square feet per ton
